2017 Competition Winners



The purpose of this contest is to encourage high-quality publications and content by NSPS affiliates. The contest is judged by a committee established by the Chair of the NSPS Board of Directors, and it is open to newsletters, magazines, and content in either published between January and December of the previous year. The affiliate’s executive director, publication’s editor, or their designee may submit entries for consideration. The  following criteria apply for submissions to the 2018 contest:

  • Entries must have been published between January and December 2018. 

  • One entry per state per category.

  • For each entry, at least six (6) copies must be provided for judging.

  • An entry form and a cover letter must accompany each entry.

  • The cover letter shall specify the category to which the entry is being submitted, and provide a brief statement about the entry’s audience.


Entry Categories

  • Affiliate Newsletter
  • Affiliate Magazine
  • Original Feature Article—published in either a newsletter or a magazine.
  • Editorial—published in either a newsletter or a magazine.


Criteria for Judging the Entries

  • Affiliate newsletters and magazines will be judged on the focus and quality of their content, readability, overall publication design and page layout.

  • Original Feature articles will be judged on the substance of the story, relevance of the story, photography/design in telling the story, readability, composition, and clarity.

  • Editorial entries will be judged on how well the position taken is stated, composition, and clarity.

  • Entries will be judged by the Excellence in Journalism Judging Committee comprising four members drawn from the NSPS Board of Directors and a Chair with a publications background.

  • The Committee may decide not to make an award if less than five publications are submitted in any contest year. The decisions of the judges are final.







NSPS strives to establish and further common interests, objectives, and political effort that would help bind the surveying profession into a unified body in the United States.

Governance: The National Society of Professional Surveyors Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors. The NSPS Board of Directors meets twice per year.   NSPS has working agreements with state surveying organizations which are represented on the NSPS Board of Directors, and with the NSPS Foundation, Inc.
