Curt Sumner's background in surveying began the day after he graduated from high school in 1966. Three years later his keen interest in surveying led him to college, and eventually to licensure in Virginia in 1980. Participation in the Virginia Association of Surveyors resulted in his appointment as NSPS Governor in the late ‘80s. He subsequently served as Chair of the NSPS Board of Governors, leading eventually to President of NSPS (1997-98). Shortly after his term as NSPS President ended, Curt was asked to serve as Interim Executive Director of ACSM during a search for a permanent executive. 2019 marks the 21st anniversary of that temporary (turned permanent) appointment.
Curt’s upbringing as a minister’s son and his history in the profession have influenced his perspectives on fairness, honesty, hard work, and dedication as well as the importance of keeping an open mind in every situation.
These perspectives have served well throughout his many years in practice (which included many ALTA/NSPS (formerly ALTA/ACSM) surveys), and for his long-time participation on the ALTA/NSPS Joint Committee.
Timothy W. Burch, PLS currently serves as Vice President of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Board of Directors. He served as NSPS Secretary for four (4) years and as Governor/Director representing Illinois from 2007 to 2014).
He also serves as a Brand Ambassador for the “Get Kids into Survey” initiative created by Elaine and Elly Ball from England. He is also a longtime member of the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association.
Tim is the Director of Survey for SPACECO, Inc., Rosemont, Illinois, where his duties include establishing new markets and clients and mentoring of surveying staff. He is a co-contributing editor for survey in GPS World Magazine (2015-present) and contributor to the various surveying society newsletters.
