William Henning, Prof.LS., is a Registered Professional Land Surveyor with over 49 years of active experience in all phases of the land surveying profession. He has been actively involved with education/outreach to the geospatial community for 23 years, presenting over 145 talks and workshops on surveying and GNSS technology. Mr. Henning has authored articles for professional journals and trade magazines on GNSS positioning as well as authoring an extensive guideline document on single base real-time GNSS positioning and spearheading a real-time network guideline document, while working at NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS). He has trained various federal and local personnel in using GNSS equipment and correct positioning techniques. He has been the project lead for new height modernization geodetic networks in county-wide projects in the U.S., where he planned, helped construct, processed, adjusted and managed new geodetic control systems using NGS guidelines. He has over 21 years experience working with various GNSS manufacturers’ real- time positioning systems. Mr. Henning is Past President of the American Association for Geodetic Surveying (AAGS) and is an ACSM/AAGS Fellow. He has been presented with the NOAA Administrator’s Award for outstanding accomplishment in producing real-time GNSS guidelines. While as a geodesist at the NGS, he helped develop guidelines and support methodology for real-time GNSS positioning with state, national and international organizations. He is currently working as a consultant professional providing education workshops and other professional surveying services, and as a faculty member for Geo-Learn, Inc., where he is recording instructional videos for the use of surveyors, engineers and other geospatial professionals. Mr. Henning was awarded the Maryland Society of Surveyors “Surveyor of the Year” for 2013-14.

Topics Offered:

  •  Real-time positioning: based on the guidelines I authored while at the NGS, including best methods for the field. To include using RTNs.

  •   GNSS control for site work: do’s and don’ts, comparing static and real-time precisions and accuracies, approaches for corridor control, discussing using ground traverse data with GNSS derived control.

  •  GNSS derived heights: comparing the use of NGS guidelines for GPS derived ellipsoid and orthometric heights with RTN and/or single base positioning for orthometric heights. Looking at the statistics in the processing results. OPUS accuracies.

  •  Datums: emphasizing the new geometric and geopotential datums for 2022. Also covering Tidal datums as maintained in the NWLON, NAD 27, NAD83 (realizations), NGVD 29, NAVD 88, IGS(realizations), ITRS(realizations), WGS 84(datum changes).

  •  Heights: the role of gravity and explanation of geopotential (from “energy” to “force” to “work” to geopotential), covering ellipsoid, geoid, orthometric, and dynamic heights as from a NGS data sheet.

  •  OPUS: covering OPUS-S, OPUS-RS, OPUS-Shared and OPUS-P. I am certified OPUS-P trainer. Also a look at the Winteqc and DSWorld programs.

  •  GNSS: How does GPS work? Explaining the code and carrier phases, navigation message and almanac. How double differencing works in differential positioning. New methods such as PPP stand alone positioning can be discussed. Comparing our US DOD system with Russian, Chinese and European satellite systems.

NSPS strives to establish and further common interests, objectives, and political effort that would help bind the surveying profession into a unified body in the United States.

Governance: The National Society of Professional Surveyors Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors. The NSPS Board of Directors meets twice per year.   NSPS has working agreements with state surveying organizations which are represented on the NSPS Board of Directors, and with the NSPS Foundation, Inc.
